Adzing
(adze or adz)Adzing a beam results in a textured, but smooth finish. The adze produces a clean cut that accentuates that 'hand crafted' look. Some builders offer more than one type of adzing appearance so ask to see some samples.
An adze is similar to a common axe, except the blade is horizontal (some are slightly cupped) and slopes at a downward angle as pictured at right.

Logs that have relatively constant cell size, well-developed structural patterns, and stable physical behavior. Also called Mature wood.
As opposed to kiln dried logs or timbers. Air drying involves stacking green timbers out of doors in open sheds, so that the wood surfaces are exposed to the surrounding atmosphere. Air movement through the stack removes and evaporates moisture in equilibrium with the temperature and relative humidity of the atmosphere.
A term often used interchangeably with 'renewable energy' and energy storage technologies. Getting energy from a source other than fossil fuels (i.e. solar, wind, moving water, etc.).
A principal timber joined to posts via shouldered tenons and typically wedged from the opposed side.
A wood staining treatment used to prevent fungus from staining the wood.
